Tampere University, public university in the city of Tampere, Finland
Tampere University is a large institution in Finland created in 2019 when two older universities merged. It has seven faculties covering technology, health, engineering, natural sciences, business, social sciences, and education, with over 21,500 students at all degree levels.
The University of Tampere began in 1925 in Helsinki before moving to the city in 1966, while the technical school emerged from an institute founded in 1965 and became independent in 1972. The two institutions merged in 2019 to form the current university.
The university carries the name of its host city and reflects Tampere's shift from an industrial center to a research hub. Studying and working here means being part of a community with connections to more than 80 countries, which shapes daily campus life.
The campus spans multiple locations in Tampere, with the main site in Kalevanharju and another in Hervanta. It has a main library, sports centers, and various teaching and research buildings, though public access varies across different areas.
Several prominent Finnish leaders studied here, including Prime Minister Sanna Marin. The presence of an on-campus teaching hospital allows medical students to gain substantial practical experience directly within the institution.
