Nereidi, Seven-meter aluminum sculpture in Kalasatama, Finland.
Nereidi is a 7-meter steel installation in Kalasatama featuring laser-cut plates that form a human figure mounted on a wave-shaped concrete base. The sculpture sits near Redi Shopping Mall and serves as a visual landmark in this waterfront district.
Hans-Christian Berg created this work after winning an international competition in 2016 for public art in Helsinki's urban renewal areas. The project emerged from efforts to transform the former industrial harbor into a contemporary residential and cultural district.
The name draws from Greek mythology's nereids, those sea nymphs connected to water and nature. This artwork bridges ancient stories with modern materials, showing how contemporary artists reinterpret classical references through industrial forms.
The sculpture stands at the southern end of Kalasatamankatu street and is easily reached on foot from Redi Shopping Mall. The area is open and accessible at all times without entry restrictions.
The sculpture transforms depending on where you stand and look at it from different viewpoints. From some angles you see abstract lines, while from others a figure gazing upward into the distance comes into focus.
