Champmol, Medieval Carthusian monastery in Dijon, France

The monastery complex includes two cloisters, a church, individual cottages, and a private oratory built in Gothic architectural style at the edge of Dijon.

Duke Philip the Bold founded Champmol in 1383 as a burial site for the Valois Dukes of Burgundy, with construction starting after acquiring land in 1377.

The Well of Moses, created by sculptor Claus Sluter between 1395 and 1403, features monumental figures of Old Testament prophets within the central courtyard.

The monastery buildings now house a psychiatric hospital, while many original artworks are displayed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.

Twenty-four choir monks resided in individual hermitages around the main cloister, making it an unusually large community for a Carthusian monastery.
