Prat Peyrot, Ski resort in Val-d'Aigoual, France.
Prat Peyrot is a ski resort on the Mont Aigoual massif in the Cévennes, sitting on a ridge in southern France. The slopes cover a range of difficulty levels, from gentle runs for beginners to steeper sections for more practiced skiers.
The resort was developed in the early 1970s, bringing winter sports to a part of southern France where they were largely unknown before. The Mont Aigoual had already been known for its weather station since the late 19th century, well before the ski area was created.
Prat Peyrot sits in the Cévennes, a region better known for hiking and forests than for snow sports. Skiing here feels different from the large Alpine resorts, with a more local and low-key crowd on the slopes.
The resort is reached by mountain roads that can be snowy or icy in winter, so winter tires or chains are worth having. Once there, the area is compact and easy to get around on foot, with all facilities close together.
The Mont Aigoual weather observatory, sitting just above the ski area, has been staffed without interruption for over 100 years and is one of the few mountain observatories in France still open to visitors. On clear days, the view from the top reaches both the Alps and the Pyrenees at the same time.
