Campus 1 de Caen, Historical monument and educational building in Caen, France
Campus 1 de Caen is a university site north of Caen Castle that spans across roughly 32 hectares and connects various academic buildings through a central portico. The grounds contain teaching and research facilities arranged within a spacious layout.
The site emerged following the destruction of the old Faculty building during the Battle of Caen in the Second World War. Architect Henry Bernard designed this new university complex as part of the city's post-war reconstruction.
The campus features art pieces like the bronze Phoenix sculpture by Louis Leygue that stand among the buildings and shape daily student life. These artworks and artistic details create gathering spaces and meeting points throughout the grounds.
The grounds connect to the city center via tramway lines T1 and T2, with two dedicated stations serving the campus directly. This public transport link makes reaching downtown Caen straightforward from the site.
The scientific library opened in 1968 and stands as a distinctive structure at the heart of the grounds. Its characteristic design shapes the campus appearance and serves as a visual reference point for many visitors.
