Hôtel des chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem in Toulouse
Hôtel des chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem in Toulouse, Renaissance priory on Rue de la Dalbade in Toulouse, France.
The Hôtel des chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem is a Renaissance building in Toulouse featuring a symmetrical facade that extends across multiple bays. The facade is marked by two grand entrances, while the upper stories are richly decorated with varying window forms.
The Hospitaller Order established their priory here in the early 12th century and occupied this location for centuries. The current building was constructed around 1670, replacing earlier structures with the modern architecture of that era.
The building shapes the appearance of Rue de la Dalbade with its balanced facade that reflects Renaissance ideals in the city. Walking through the grand portals shows how this house was part of urban life and continues to be today.
The building now houses a public office and can be viewed from outside, while interior access requires permission. The location is central in the city and easily accessible by public transportation.
During excavations between 2003 and 2005, medieval wall paintings were discovered beneath the current building. These findings reveal that important remnants of earlier structures remain preserved underneath the Renaissance edifice.
