Notre-Dame de la Dalbade, Gothic church in Carmes district, Toulouse, France
Notre-Dame de la Dalbade is a Gothic church in Toulouse with a striking Renaissance brick facade featuring a colored ceramic tympanum above its entrance. The tympanum depicts the Coronation of the Virgin in a work attributed to Fra Angelico.
An original 6th-century church was completely rebuilt in the late Renaissance period after a fire destroyed the earlier structure. The reconstruction shaped the building's current appearance with its characteristic brick design.
The church takes its name from the white lime coating that once covered its outer walls, with 'Dalbade' coming from the Latin word 'dealbata'.
The church sits in central Toulouse near several metro stations, making it easily accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors should confirm opening times before arriving, as access to the interior may vary seasonally.
The bell tower once soared to 91 meters, making it the city's tallest structure until its collapse in 1926. This dramatic loss permanently altered the building's profile and remains a defining moment in its story.
