Hôtel du Lion-Noir, Renaissance private mansion in Troyes, France

Hôtel du Lion-Noir is a three-story Renaissance residence with an ornately carved stone facade located in central Troyes. The stonework features detailed sculptural elements that reflect the wealth and status of its original merchant owner.

A wealthy merchant built this residence in the late 1500s after a fire destroyed the previous structure on the site. The new construction reflected the Renaissance architectural principles that were then transforming European cities.

The building reflects Italian design influences that shaped French urban homes of this era. You can see this blend in the careful stonework and overall proportions of the facade.

The house is located in central Troyes and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. Arrange a visit in advance through the local tourism office, as the building is not open to the public on a regular basis.

Inside the house sits a rare wooden spiral staircase, an architectural feature seldom found in French Renaissance homes. This hand-crafted element remains in good condition and demonstrates the skilled craftsmanship of the period.
