Hôtel Juvénal des Ursins, Renaissance private mansion in central Troyes, France.
Hôtel Juvénal des Ursins is a Renaissance private mansion in central Troyes that features large windows with molded frames and a three-part gothic oriel window, crowned by an intricately carved turret. The facade displays the architectural style of the 16th century and shows the high standards of a wealthy merchant family.
The Jouvenel family, cloth merchants and magistrates of Troyes who later took the name Juvénal des Ursins, rebuilt this mansion in white stone after the major fire of 1524. Part of the earlier 15th-century structure survived the fire, including a striking roof window that was incorporated into the new building.
The interior windows display stained glass with images of donors and the Crucifixion, while a central coat of arms shows French royal symbols and the Order of Saint Michael. These decorations reflect the family's high social standing and their desire to display wealth and faith through artistic detail.
The building is located on Rue Champeaux in the center and is clearly visible from the street, though it is not open to visitors. Those wanting to admire the Renaissance architecture can view the facade and turret from outside and observe the fine details of the windows from the street.
The roof features a large gothic dormer window from the 15th century that predates the rebuilding and was reinstalled after the fire. This window shows that during reconstruction, older elements were preserved and merged with the new Renaissance structure.
