Église de la Madeleine

The église de la Madeleine is a Gothic church in Troyes that shows strong Renaissance influences in its design. The building features a square tower built in 1525 and contains many stained glass windows depicting biblical stories and religious figures.

Construction of this church began in 1120, making it the oldest in Troyes. A major rebuilding took place around 1200 as Gothic architecture was emerging as the new style.

The stone rood screen, created between 1508 and 1515 by sculptor Jean Gailde, shows the blend of religious architecture and Renaissance artistry that defined the period. This craftsmanship reflects the skill level that was rare in French church design at that time.

The church can be reached on foot from the old town and offers an open setting for exploration. It is best to visit during the warmer months when visitor hours tend to be more frequent.

The building contains a statue of Saint Martha, crafted by the Master of Chaource, positioned within one of the side aisles. This figure reveals the high quality of sculptural work that was produced in the region during that period.
