Port de La Cayenne, Marine port in Marennes, France
Port de La Cayenne is a maritime facility in Marennes situated along the Seudre River, spreading over several kilometers with distinct operational zones. It combines a pleasure marina holding around 300 boats, a navigable channel, and oyster farming grounds, all interconnected as a working waterfront.
Development of the facility began in the mid-1800s when the Charente-Seudre canal was constructed to link the area with the river system. A major bridge was built across the Seudre in the later 20th century, transforming local transportation and ending the need for ferry crossings.
The port reflects a way of life rooted in oyster farming, with colored huts dotting the shoreline as working spaces for local harvesters. Visitors can observe how this practice shapes daily rhythms and remains central to the community's identity.
Visitors will find docking facilities, a harbor office, refueling station, and lifting equipment available throughout the site. The area is most accessible during high tide when the channel is fully navigable and all zones can be easily reached.
Before the bridge was built, this location served as a major crossing point with a ferry connecting the two sides of the river. Today that crossing is gone, but the spot still carries the memory of when water was the only link between the communities on either bank.
