Pic de Ginebre, Mountain summit in Pyrenees, France.
Pic de Ginèvre is a mountain summit in the Pyrenees standing between the French departments of Pyrénées-Orientales and Ariège. The peak rises about 2,400 meters and is surrounded by dense forests and mountain meadows.
The peak has marked the boundary between the historical regions of Capcir and Donezan since medieval times. This natural border line served as a dividing point between territories for centuries.
The name comes from the Catalan word 'ginebre', meaning juniper, reflecting the local plants and languages of the region. The vegetation on the slopes shows typical high mountain shrubs and juniper growth that shape the valley's appearance.
The best approach is via established hiking trails that start from the valley and lead to steep sections. Starting early in the day is recommended to have enough daylight for the descent.
The northern slope contains the source of the Quérigut River and a small mountain lake with fresh water. These hidden water sources are rarely visited and offer a quiet rest spot for hikers.
