Hôtel de Clermont-Tonnerre
Hôtel de Clermont-Tonnerre, Private mansion at 118 rue du Bac in Paris, France.
The Hôtel de Clermont-Tonnerre is a private mansion on rue du Bac featuring a grand entrance portal decorated with sculpted allegories and intricate ironwork. Its street-facing facades display refined architectural ornamentation typical of the 18th century period.
Construction began in 1714 under architect Claude-Nicolas Le Pas-Dubuisson and sculptor Louis Dupain as a statement of early Enlightenment ideals. In 1997, the street-facing facades and roofs received official historical protection status.
The garden room holds decorative elements from the 1700s that may have come from an earlier mansion on Boulevard Saint-Denis. These spaces show how wealthy Parisians of that era designed their private retreats.
Located on rue du Bac in Paris's 7th district, the building sits amid other classical structures that define this neighborhood. The best view of the street-facing details is from the pavement directly opposite, where the sculptural and ironwork elements are most visible.
Whether decorative elements were brought from elsewhere or created on site remains somewhat unclear, adding a layer of mystery to the rooms. This uncertainty invites visitors to wonder about the stories behind individual details and how the interior evolved over time.
