Fortifications de la Rhune, Military fortifications on La Rhune mountain, Urrugne, France.
The fortifications of La Rhune are defensive military structures spread across the mountain slopes, consisting of several smaller strongholds, walls, and lookout points positioned at different elevations. These structures adapt to the natural terrain and are distributed across three neighboring territories.
These structures were built between 1793 and 1794 to protect the border against Spanish attacks during a period of war and political upheaval. They represent a rapid military response to threats in a contested region.
These fortifications emerged at a strategic location between two nations and show how people once used walls and defensive works to mark borders. Visitors walking on the mountain today can still see how these old border defenses shaped the land.
You can reach these defense remains by following marked hiking trails that vary in difficulty depending on which section you explore. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as the mountain slopes are steep and require careful footing.
Thirteen of these structures received protected heritage status and are now recognized as sites of historical importance. This makes them a rare example of a complete network of fortifications from this period still standing on a mountain.
