Chartreuse d'Aillon

The monastery features individual cells arranged around a central cloister, with private gardens allowing monks to cultivate plants within the property limits.

Founded in 1178 as Mont-Sainte-Marie Charterhouse, the monastery operated until 1793 when the French Revolution led to its dissolution and partial demolition.

The monastery followed strict Carthusian traditions of silent contemplation, with monks dedicating their lives to prayer and agricultural work in complete isolation.

The site closed permanently on August 31, 2024, but visitors can explore the grounds through self-guided audio tours that explain the monastery's architecture.

The original entrance portal of the monastery now serves as the entrance to the parish church of Aillon-le-Jeune, preserving this architectural element.
