Red Church

The Red Church is an Eastern Orthodox structure in central Greece with walls of bright red bricks and stone showing Byzantine architectural details. The building displays the traditional design typical of churches from this period.

This structure was built in 1280 by brothers John and Theodore Tsimiskis, who held important positions in local administration. It originally functioned as the main building of a monastic complex.

The interior holds frescoes from the 13th century showing saints and the founders Theodore Tsimiskis and his wife Maria. These images reflect the religious beliefs and family connections of the people who built this place.

The church sits in the Palaiochori settlement, a few kilometers south of Vourgareli, and can be reached via the national Arta-Trikala road. The location is easy to find for those traveling through the region.

This structure shares construction details with the Church of the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos in Ohrid, suggesting the same craftsmen may have built both buildings. This connection ties the church to a wider architectural network across the region.
