Faneromeni monastery, Religious monastery in Frini, Lefkada, Greece
Faneromeni monastery is an Orthodox monastery set on a hilltop close to Lefkada town, on the Greek island of Lefkada. The complex is made up of several buildings arranged across different levels, surrounded by gardens that open toward the northern coast of the island and the Greek mainland.
The monastery was founded in 1634 on the site of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Artemis. It burned down several times during the Venetian period and was rebuilt each time, which is why the buildings visitors see today are much younger than the site itself.
The monastery is still an active place of worship, drawing both locals and visitors throughout the year, especially on religious feast days. The small ecclesiastical museum inside displays Byzantine icons and old manuscripts that belong to the island's religious tradition.
The monastery is easy to reach by car from Lefkada town, and there is parking near the entrance at the top of the hill. The paths through the grounds are comfortable to walk, though the terrain is slightly uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Tucked into the monastery gardens is a small animal sanctuary known as the Ark, home to deer, squirrels, turtles, and birds. Most visitors come for the church or the view and only discover this corner by wandering through the grounds.
