Peruća Lake, Artificial reservoir between Sinj and Vrlika, Croatia
Peruća Lake is an artificial reservoir created along the Cetina River between Sinj and Vrlika. The water fills a deep basin where the river once flowed freely.
A dam was built in 1958 to harness the river's power for energy production. This construction flooded the valley floor, submerging settlements and an old Orthodox monastery that had stood for centuries.
Local communities gather at the water for fishing and rowing, especially at the Garjak facility where people continue traditional boat-based activities. These everyday uses connect the lake to the daily rhythms of nearby towns.
The shore is best explored by car since different access points are spread across the area. The water welcomes swimmers and rowers, particularly during warmer months when conditions are most pleasant.
During a severe drought in 2003, the submerged monastery briefly rose from the water, becoming visible for the first time since flooding in 1959. This rare occurrence allowed people to glimpse the medieval structure before it sank again.
