Hollókői Protected Landscape Area, Landscape park near Hollókő, Hungary.
This protected landscape spans 141 hectares across the northern part of the Central-Cserhát volcanic massif and features narrow hills with elongated volcanic formations. The terrain includes a network of marked trails, some leading to the castle ruins and circling Várhegy hill, while others connect to educational nature routes.
The area gained official protection status in 1977 and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site with Hollókő Old Village in 1987. This recognition honored both the geological features and the cultural importance of the region.
The landscape reflects the farming traditions of the Palóc people through carefully maintained pastures and managed forests that have been shaped over generations. This way of land use continues to define how the hills and valleys look today.
The best time for hiking is from spring through autumn, when trails are easiest to access and weather conditions are favorable. It helps to wear good footwear and bring plenty of water, as the hilly paths can be demanding.
A natural spring at the southern foot of Várhegy hill produces water rich in iron and manganese, used since medieval times. This carbonated water holds a long tradition in the region and was historically valued for its properties.
