L'Huillier-Coburg Palace in Edelény

L'Huillier-Coburg Palace is a baroque château with a U-shaped structure and a sprawling main facade situated on an island in the Bódva river. The building ranks among the largest palaces in the country and shapes the surrounding landscape with its architectural presence.

A French landowner named Jean-Francois L'Huillier commissioned this palace in the early 18th century and invested significant resources into its construction. The project engaged numerous workers and stretched across more than a decade before the structure was completed.

The interior rooms display elaborate rococo frescoes that reflect the life and elegance of the 18th century. Visitors can see how wealthy residents once adorned their living spaces with such detailed artistic decorations that have survived to the present day.

The palace is accessible on foot via a bridge or walkway to the island, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes to explore the grounds easily. Path conditions can vary depending on the season, so it is best to prepare for changing circumstances.

The builders sourced stones from the immediate surroundings to construct the walls and foundations, while timber had to be brought in from considerable distances. This mixture of local and distant materials reveals the logistical challenges that the construction faced.
