Castle of Borsod, Medieval castle ruins in Edelény, Hungary
The Castle of Borsod is a medieval fortress that once crowned a hilltop overlooking Edelény in northern Hungary. The remaining stone walls and foundations trace out the layout of residential quarters, defensive barriers, and structures that served administrative purposes.
This fortress was built in the 11th century to serve as an administrative center and took its name from Bors, its first steward, which later became the name of Borsod County. Following the Mongol raid of 1241, wooden defensive structures were replaced with solid stone walls to make the castle stronger.
The castle grounds contain archaeological findings that demonstrate the medieval Hungarian architectural techniques and defensive fortification methods of the period.
The ruins sit on a hillside and can be reached by a marked path starting from the village. Information boards at the site explain the different areas and the fortress's past, allowing you to explore at your own pace.
The fortress withstood the Mongol invasion of 1241, leading to significant modifications in its structure from wooden defenses to stone fortifications.
