Csehbánya Formation, Geological formation in Bakony Mountains, Hungary.
The Csehbánya Formation is a geological layer found across the Transdanubian Mountains in Veszprém County, composed of siltstone, sandstone conglomerate, and claystone strata. The rocks reveal how sediments accumulated in a river and floodplain environment long ago.
The formation developed approximately 85 million years ago during the Late Santonian, when the area was a broad floodplain distinct from nearby swampy regions. This environmental contrast allowed different organisms to be preserved in the rock layers.
The formation holds importance for researchers and students of prehistoric life, with the Iharkút location serving as a key study site where numerous fossil specimens help piece together ancient environments.
Access to the formation is provided through a former bauxite quarry where the exposed rock layers reach significant depths, showing the strata clearly. Visitors should be ready for uneven terrain and steep walls, particularly when exploring research sites.
Remains of Hungarosaurus tormai have been discovered at various sites, representing an armored dinosaur that inhabited the region millions of years ago. Such discoveries are uncommon and help scientists understand the animals that lived in this ancient environment.
