Oak of Bátaszék

The oak of Bátaszék is a downy oak standing about 17.5 meters tall in Tolna County. The trunk is robust and shows signs of considerable age, while sturdy branches spread widely in all directions.

The tree originated between 300 and 400 years ago as a remnant from an 18th-century forest. It witnessed the construction of a nearby plague chapel and has endured through centuries of local change.

The tree holds significance for the local community and was named Tree of the Year in 2016. Residents view it as a symbol of continuity and their connection to the land.

The tree is easily reachable on foot and located near the village center, making a visit possible without special equipment. It is best visited on bright days to fully appreciate the tree's structure and age.

Following an old local tradition, residents pour wine on the trunk each year to ensure good grape harvests in their vineyards. This practice directly connects the oak to the region's wine culture.
