Air Terjun Ponot, Natural waterfall in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Air Terjun Ponot is a waterfall in North Sumatra consisting of three consecutive tiers that plunge approximately 250 meters down through dense tropical vegetation. The water forms several natural pools at different levels along its descent.
The waterfall is part of the Asahan River system, which has served as an essential water source for North Sumatran communities for generations. The river has carved its distinctive form through the local geology over an extended period.
Local residents of Tangga village maintain traditional practices of environmental stewardship around the waterfall grounds.
The path from the entrance gate to the waterfall stretches about 1.5 kilometers through woodland, so sturdy footwear is advisable. Parking facilities for motorcycles are available at the site for visitor convenience.
At each tier of the waterfall, the water collects in natural pools surrounded by large moss-covered granite boulders. These pools were formed through erosion and now serve as refreshing spots where visitors can interact with the water.
