Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles

The Cathedral of the Assumption exhibits Romanesque Revival architecture with a facade influenced by the Cathedral of Pisa and contains marble pillars from Cork, Galway, and Sicily.

Construction started in 1861 under Archbishop Patrick Leahy, replacing the previous Big Chapel built in 1807, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1879 by Archbishop Thomas Croke.

The cathedral maintains a tabernacle from the 16th century, originally from a Jesuit church in Rome, representing the connection between Irish and Italian Catholic heritage.

The cathedral serves as the mother church of the Metropolitan Province of Cashel and functions as the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly.

Eight bells cast by John Murphy of Dublin in 1867 reside in the tower, now operated by hammers instead of traditional change ringing methods.
