Fire and Water Fountain, Kinetic fountain in Dizengoff Square, Israel
The Fire and Water Fountain is a kinetic sculpture on Dizengoff Square that uses rotating wheels with geometric shapes to create constantly changing visual patterns through water jets and flames. The structure combines multiple technical systems to present water, fire, light, and sound effects all at once.
The artwork was designed by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam over a ten-year period and installed in 1986. Its installation was part of a comprehensive renovation of the public square.
The fountain's name reflects the two opposing forces that meet and interact at this site. Visitors experience it as a visible expression of Tel Aviv's artistic direction and creative character.
The displays featuring water, fire, light, and music run multiple times throughout the day and evening, so visitors can experience different shows depending on when they arrive. It is worth visiting at different times to see how the lighting and effects change.
During plaza renovations in 2016, the entire structure was temporarily moved to another location before being returned to its original spot. This relocation shows how central the work is to the city's identity.
