Burj E-Salam

Burj E-Salam is a stone citadel positioned on high ground in Haifa, commanding views across the Mediterranean coast and Haifa Bay. The structure features thick walls with multiple compartments and defensive features that reveal its military purpose.

The fortification was built in stages across many centuries, incorporating architectural elements from Hasmonean, Herodian, Byzantine, and Early Muslim periods. It underwent multiple phases of reconstruction under different rulers to adapt to changing military needs.

The fortress reflects layers of different architectural styles that developed under Mamluk and Ottoman rule. Visitors can observe how successive periods left their mark in the building techniques and materials used throughout the structure.

Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is rocky and uneven in places throughout the site. Visit during cooler hours of the day, especially since the elevated location offers limited shade.

The stone walls incorporate remains from numerous historical periods, documenting centuries of continuous military occupation. These layered materials allow visitors to literally read the site's long history through the walls themselves.
