Wholesale markets in Tel Aviv, Wholesale market in central Tel Aviv, Israel
The Tel Aviv Wholesale Market was a large trading facility in central Tel Aviv, Israel, where fresh produce, seafood, textiles, and household goods were sold in bulk. The site was made up of rows of vendor stalls spread across a wide open area, serving retailers, restaurant owners, and bulk buyers from across the region.
The market opened in 1952 and spent decades as the main wholesale supply point for Tel Aviv's traders. It closed in 2006 after being moved from its original home at the Aliya Market.
The market was a meeting point for traders from across the country who gathered before dawn to negotiate and exchange goods. The produce section in particular had a direct, face-to-face trading style that set the tone for the whole place.
The site no longer exists as a market, so there is nothing to visit at the original location today. Those interested in the area's trading history can explore nearby neighborhoods, where older commercial streets still give a sense of how the city once traded.
Even after the official closure in 2006, some traders continued working on the site for several more years before demolition began in 2010. The land was then redeveloped into offices and commercial buildings, with no visible trace of the original market left behind.
