Banda, Administrative center in Banda district, India
Banda is a city in Banda district within Uttar Pradesh state, positioned where the Ken River meets smaller tributaries on the central plateau. The older town spreads along the riverbank with narrow lanes and markets, while newer sections extend southward connecting residential areas with administrative buildings.
The city developed as a trading post along old routes through the central plateau and changed hands several times between regional kingdoms. During the 18th century it became the seat of local nawabs before evolving into an administrative center during the British colonial period.
The population of Banda maintains traditional practices through regular celebrations at local temples while incorporating elements of modern Indian society.
The city is accessible by rail connections from Kanpur and Allahabad or by road through intercity buses from surrounding districts. Summer heat makes the cooler months between October and March more comfortable for visiting.
On the eastern edge of town a stretch of the Ken River runs through rocky gorges where turtles and water birds gather in shallow pools. Fishermen use traditional methods with woven baskets that can be observed from the riverbank during mornings and evenings.
