Chitragupta Temple

Chitragupta Temple is a Hindu shrine in Khajuraho with an octagonal ceiling and intricate carvings showing different gods and divine beings. The walls feature detailed stone sculptures, including a central image of Surya, the sun god, riding a chariot pulled by seven horses.

The shrine was built in the early 1020s and shows the building skills of the Chandela dynasty during their most powerful period in medieval India. Its structure reflects the wealth and technical knowledge this ruling family had developed at the height of their power.

The walls display sculptures of Hindu gods, celestial beings, and scenes from everyday life during medieval times. These carvings show what people believed in and how they lived back then.

The shrine is open year-round and can be explored with local guides who speak various languages. The building is within walking distance of other temples in the complex, making it easy to visit several sites in one day.

A striking detail is the central statue of the sun god wearing armor, a representation rarely seen in other temples. Equally unusual is a sculpture showing Nandi with a human body and a bull head, an uncommon interpretation of this sacred animal.
