Vishvanath Temple, Hindu temple in Khajuraho, India
Vishvanath Temple is a Hindu temple in Khajuraho featuring a grand sandstone structure with three rows of intricate carvings along its outer walls and a towering spire. The interior contains multiple chambers arranged around a central sanctum, where worshippers gather to pray.
The temple was constructed by Chandela king Dhanga and consecrated in 999 CE. Its inner sanctums house two sacred lingas made of emerald and stone that have remained preserved through the centuries.
The temple walls display carved figures of deities, celestial beings, and scenes from daily life, reflecting the artistic and religious practices of medieval India.
The temple is accessible during daylight hours through designated pathways, with guided tours available to explain the architectural and religious features. Visitors must remove their shoes before entering the sacred inner chambers.
This is the only structure in Khajuraho that still retains its original Nandi pavilion with an intact statue at the entrance. This rare feature makes it stand out among the temples in the complex.
