Shantinatha temple, Jain temple in Khajuraho, India

Shantinatha Temple is a Jain shrine located in the eastern section of Khajuraho with multiple sanctuaries arranged within a quadrangle layout. The shrines contain numerous stone sculptures and statues that define the religious character and structure of the site.

The temple originated during the Chandella dynasty and preserves sections and two shrines from that period. An inscription dated 1027-28 CE records the installation of a statue by Chandradeva, showing the site's importance to the ruling family.

This temple serves as a living place of worship for Jains, where devotees come to pray and perform rituals. The walls showcase stone carvings depicting deities and scenes from Jain scriptures that tell spiritual stories.

The temple sits in the eastern area of Khajuraho and welcomes visitors throughout most days. It helps to arrive in early morning or late afternoon hours when fewer crowds gather at the site.

The main statue of Shantinatha stands about 4 meters tall and is surrounded by intricate carvings featuring musicians, animals, and geometric patterns. This detailed stonework represents one of the finest examples of the craftsmanship from that era.
