Chausath Yogini Temple, Khajuraho, Hindu temple in Khajuraho, India
Chausath Yogini Temple in Khajuraho is a structure with a rectangular layout, featuring small shrines arranged on an elevated platform. Today about 35 shrine cells remain from the original collection, each with granite pillars framing their doorways.
The temple was built around 885 CE during the reign of the Chandela dynasty and stands as the oldest surviving structure in the Khajuraho complex. Its construction reflects the architectural innovations of that era.
The temple was dedicated to feminine divine powers, with 64 Yoginis representing different aspects of spiritual force. This place served worshippers as a center for spiritual practices focused on honoring the goddess Durga and her various forms.
The temple is best visited between October and March when weather is mild and walking through the site is pleasant. The nearby town of Khajuraho offers accommodations and dining options for visitors.
Three goddess statues from the temple, including Brahmani and Maheshvari, were moved to the nearby museum where they are now displayed. These works represent some of the few known examples of these specific divine representations from that period.
