Ranjit Sagar Dam, Embankment dam in Pathankot and Kathua districts, India.
Ranjit Sagar Dam is an earth-fill embankment dam across the Ravi River on the border between Pathankot and Kathua districts. The structure holds back a large reservoir and supplies water to fields and turbines in the surrounding area.
Planning for the dam started in 1953 with feasibility studies, while construction itself began in 1981. The first turbines for power generation came into operation in 2000.
The dam bears the name of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who established the Sikh Empire and shaped the region's historical development.
The site is large and sits in hilly terrain, so comfortable footwear is recommended for a visit. Viewing points overlooking the reservoir are located at elevated spots with open views across the water.
The penstock pipes inside the dam are among the largest in diameter in all of India. The dam also ranks among the tallest earth-fill dams in the country.
