Atal Setu Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Basholi, India
Atal Setu Bridge is a cable-stayed structure measuring 592 meters in length that crosses the Ravi River between Kathua and Pathankot districts. Two vertical pylons support the steel cables that hold the bridge deck above the water.
Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone in May 2011 after the Indian Institute of Technology approved the design. Construction continued for several years until the link between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir was completed.
The structure carries the name of a former Prime Minister and links two states with different administrative structures and local customs. Traders and travelers use this connection daily to move between markets in both regions.
The crossing is open to all types of vehicles and significantly shortens travel time between the two neighboring districts. Pedestrians have no separate access, so the passage is suitable only for motorized transport.
This construction was the first cable-stayed bridge built in northern India and ranks fourth nationwide among structures of this type. The pylons are visible from a great distance and serve as a landmark for drivers along the river course.
