Mayurakshi River, River in Trikut Hills, India
The Mayurakshi is a river flowing through Jharkhand and West Bengal, originating in the Trikut Hills and traveling across the region. It eventually joins the Hooghly River, with four main tributaries feeding into it along its path.
The Massanjore Dam was built starting in 1951, with construction finishing in 1955 with Canadian support. This project transformed water management on the river and opened new possibilities for irrigation and water use.
The name Mayurakshi comes from Sanskrit, meaning Peacock Eyes, reflecting the clear water seen during dry periods. This name remains part of local identity for people living along the river.
The river is accessible from several points, particularly near the Massanjore Dam where viewing areas exist. The best time to visit is during or after monsoon season, when water levels are higher and the landscape appears more green.
The river system is fed by four main tributaries—Brahmani, Dwaraka, Bakreshwar, and Kopai—which together supply significant water throughout the year. These tributaries make it a major water system for the region.
