Mount Mary Church

Mount Mary Church is a basilica featuring Gothic and Neo-Romanesque architectural elements set on an elevated location in Bandra. The structure displays ornate stonework and traditional church design with multiple chapels arranged inside.

Portuguese Jesuits built a small chapel at this location in the 16th century, which was later reconstructed. Construction of the current basilica began in the late 1800s and has defined the Bandra landscape since then.

The church serves as a gathering place where locals come to pray to Mary and celebrate religious occasions together. The space draws visitors during festivals and holy days who light candles and participate in devotions.

The best way to visit is by taking the steps that lead upward from the street level to reach the church. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter for exploring the grounds and interior.

One striking feature is the central statue of Mary holding the infant Jesus on her right arm, which differs from typical Catholic depictions. This arrangement makes the statue a notable detail visitors often discover while inside.
