Gorakhpur, Administrative city in Uttar Pradesh, India
Gorakhpur is an administrative city in Gorakhpur district within the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, stretching along the Rapti River. The settlement forms a key junction between the Gangetic Plain and the foothills of the Himalayas.
The East India Company took control of the area in 1801 after the Nawab of Awadh ceded the territory. Over the following decades, the settlement grew into a major trade and transport hub under British administration.
The city takes its name from Guru Gorakhnath, a medieval yogi whose teachings still shape the religious identity of the region. Pilgrims and worshippers gather regularly in the large temple complex, where chants and ritual acts define the rhythm of the day.
The large railway station connects the city with destinations across India, while buses and auto-rickshaws handle local connections within the urban area. The months between October and March offer cooler temperatures and more comfortable conditions for outdoor activity.
Gita Press, founded in 1926, prints and distributes Hindu religious texts on a large scale from its facility in the city. The publishing house has released millions of books in many Indian languages, shaping religious reading habits across generations.
