Gangamoola, Mountain peak in Western Ghats, Karnataka, India
Gangamoola is a mountain peak within Kudremukh National Park rising to 1458 meters, covered by dense forests that thrive in the region. The area receives substantial rainfall throughout the year, supporting rich forest vegetation.
The area around Gangamoola was historically mined for iron ore, with deposits of magnetite and quartzite being extracted for many years. Mining operations in the region came to an end in 2005.
The mountain is home to a temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati and contains a statue of Varaha inside a natural cave. Visitors can sense how sacred this place remains for local worshippers who come to pray here.
A permit is required from forest authorities before visiting the mountain and entry is allowed during specific daylight hours. Visitors should check local regulations and plan their visit accordingly.
The watershed at this location is unusual, with three major rivers originating from the peak and flowing in different directions. The Tunga river flows northeast, Bhadra flows east, and Netravathi flows west toward the Arabian Sea.
