Hanumana Gundi Falls, Natural waterfall in Kudremukh National Park, Chikkamagaluru district, India
Hanumana Gundi Falls is a tiered waterfall set inside Kudremukh National Park in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. The water runs down a rocky hillside in several separate drops, each falling over bare stone before gathering into a pool at the bottom.
The waterfall sits within Kudremukh National Park, which was formally protected in the late 20th century to safeguard the forests of the Western Ghats. Before that, the area was known mainly to local communities and those who worked in the surrounding forest lands.
The name Hanumana Gundi refers to Hanuman, a major deity in Hinduism known for strength and devotion. Locals from the surrounding villages treat the site with a degree of reverence that visitors can notice in how quietly and respectfully people tend to behave here.
Reaching the base requires walking down a long stone staircase through dense forest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The path can be slippery after rain, and going early in the morning gives you the trail largely to yourself.
Halfway down the falls, the water divides into several separate streams that each take their own path over the rock before meeting again at the bottom. This split is best seen from one of the mid-level landings on the staircase, where you can watch both streams at once.
