Horanadu, Hindu pilgrimage site in Chikkamagaluru district, India
Horanadu is a village in the Western Ghats centered around the Annapoorneshwari Temple, which sits at about 831 meters elevation surrounded by dense forests and mountain ridges. The landscape features green slopes, flowing streams, and natural vegetation that define the valley.
According to tradition, sage Agastya established the Annapoorneshwari deity at this location, giving the site deep spiritual roots. A new processional idol was added to the temple in 1973, marking an expansion of worship practices.
The temple feeds visitors from all backgrounds with free vegetarian meals served throughout the day. This practice reflects a belief that nourishing guests is a sacred duty.
The village is accessible by bus from major towns, with the nearest airport in Mangalore. The cooler months offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the forest paths and temple grounds.
Male visitors remove their shirts when entering the temple grounds, following a strict custom that has been maintained for generations. Three daily prayer ceremonies bring the community together at scheduled times.
