Jamalabad Fort

Jamalabad Fort is a granite fortification sitting atop a hill in the Dakshina Kannada region. The structure includes stone walls and defensive parapets distributed across multiple levels of the hill.

The fort was built in 1794 and named after a family member of the ruling power. British troops captured it a few years later during a regional military conflict.

The fort served as a spiritual center where local communities gathered for religious observances. Today, the carved stone passages and elevated location draw visitors interested in the relationship between the place and those who inhabited it.

Reaching the fort requires climbing a long series of stone steps carved into the hillside, which demands reasonable fitness. Starting early in the day is wise, as it allows time to explore before midday heat and gives better light for viewing.

At the highest point stands an ancient rainwater collection system, revealing how residents managed scarce resources. This engineering solution was vital for sustaining a permanent garrison on the summit.
