Dakshina Kannada district, Administrative district in Karnataka, India
Dakshina Kannada is an administrative district between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea in Karnataka. This district divides into nine talukas with its headquarters located in Mangalore on the coast.
This region fell under Alupa dynasty rule beginning in the eighth century. Later the Vijayanagara Empire controlled the area before Mysore rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan took power.
The district maintains a literacy rate of 88.62 percent, with residents speaking multiple languages including Tulu, Beary, and Konkani across different communities.
The area connects to major Indian cities through roads, railways, seaports, and an airport. Transport routes run between the mountains and coastline throughout the administrative territory.
Three rivers flow through the district territory before reaching the Arabian Sea. These waterways supply agriculture and local businesses along their course down to the coast.
