Netravati Bridge, Road bridge in Mangaluru, India.
Netravati Bridge is a road bridge in Mangaluru, Karnataka, that crosses the Netravati River and links the city to its southern suburbs of Thokottu, Ullal, and Deralakatte. It carries four lanes of traffic and has a dedicated pedestrian path on each side of the roadway.
The bridge was first built as a two-lane road crossing, but traffic grew faster than the structure could handle. A parallel span opened on March 20, 2014, and the two structures together now carry traffic in both directions.
The crossing links Mangaluru to temples and shrines on the southern bank that locals visit throughout the year. Pilgrims on foot are a common sight on the pedestrian paths, especially on festival days.
The bridge gets very busy during morning and evening rush hours, so crossing on foot is more comfortable in the early morning or mid-afternoon. Pedestrians should stay on the marked paths, as vehicles move at speed across the roadway.
The bridge rests on 18 pillars standing directly in the river and 6 more supports along the banks. This arrangement let engineers keep the river flowing freely during and after construction, without narrowing the channel.
