St. Aloysius Chapel, Catholic chapel at Light House Hill, Mangaluru, India
St. Aloysius Chapel is a Catholic chapel on Light House Hill in Mangaluru, known for its fully painted interior walls and ceilings. Every surface, from the arches to the dome, is covered with biblical scenes, saints' stories, and decorative plant motifs.
The chapel was founded by Jesuits in the late 19th century in a region that had long been shaped by Portuguese colonial presence. In 1899, Italian Jesuit painter Antonio Moscheni arrived and transformed the plain interior into the painted space visitors see today.
The chapel is dedicated to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a young Jesuit who gave up a noble life to care for the sick and poor. Visitors walking through the interior can follow his story panel by panel across the walls and ceiling.
The chapel sits on a hilltop and can be reached on foot with a short uphill walk. A morning visit tends to work well, as natural light entering through the windows makes the painted details easier to see.
Moscheni painted the entire interior without having received any formal training as an artist. He was first and foremost a Jesuit priest who largely taught himself to paint.
