Srimanthi Bhai Memorial Government Museum, Archaeological museum in Bejai, India
Srimanthi Bhai Memorial Government Museum is an art collection space in Bejai that houses carved wooden pieces, stone sculptures, porcelain items, and a bronze bell containing a miniature Lakshmi shrine within its interior chambers. The displays also include Paleolithic tools, historical coins, metal utensils, and replicas representing discoveries from the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro archaeological sites.
The museum was established in 1960 by Chief Minister B.D. Jatti and operates from a 1935 residence designed by Colonel V.R. Mirajkar in Italian architectural style. The collection documents artistic traditions and archaeological discoveries from the region spanning multiple centuries.
The exhibition galleries contain Tulunadu's Bootharathane idol, Paleolithic tools, coins, metal utensils, and replicas from Harappa and Mahenjodaro archaeological sites.
Visiting is possible Tuesday through Sunday, while Mondays remain closed, and arriving in early morning hours allows you to see the displays with better natural light. You can call ahead to the staff if you have specific questions about the collection.
The building stands out with its unusual ship-like design that reflects Italian architectural influences from Milan. This distinctive form makes the museum structure itself an architectural work that visitors will immediately notice upon arrival.
