Kalikamba Temple, Hindu temple in Lower Car Street, Mangalore, India
Kalikamba Temple is a Hindu temple on Lower Car Street in Mangalore, India, with shrines for Lord Ganesha, Goddess Kalikamba, Sri Vishwakarma, and Sri Vasuki, as well as chambers for the Navagrihas and a Vasantha Mantapa. The complex is built in stone and organized around several inner sanctums connected by open and covered walkways.
The temple was substantially rebuilt around 2000, when the inner sanctums for Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kalikamba were reconstructed using granite stone. The site had already served as a place of worship for the local community for a long time before this work was carried out.
The temple is a gathering place for the Vishwakarma Brahmin community, traditionally made up of goldsmiths, carpenters, and architects who come here for ceremonies and festivals. These artisan families have kept a strong connection to the site through generations of regular worship.
The temple is on Lower Car Street in a busy part of central Mangalore and can be reached on foot from nearby neighborhoods. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, and the space fills up noticeably during prayer hours and festival days.
The temple complex contains a Gurumutt, a study space for mathematics named after Sri Nagalinga Guru, also known locally as Ayya Guru. This room combines teaching and prayer under the same roof, which is an unusual feature among Hindu temples in the region.
