Kukke Subramanya Temple, Hindu temple in Dakshina Kannada district, India
Kukke Subramanya Temple is a Hindu temple in Dakshina Kannada district, in the Western Ghats mountains of India. The sanctuary sits at an elevation of 133 meters (436 feet) beside the Kumara Dhara River, surrounded by thick forest and steep slopes.
A sage discovered the sacred idol of Lord Subramanya while meditating in these remote hills many centuries ago. Over time, a place of pilgrimage grew around the site, drawing worshippers from across southern India.
Visitors come to ask for relief from Naga Dosha, a traditional belief about snake spirits that may affect marriage and prosperity. Many worshippers participate in special prayers meant to ease this ancient concern and bring peace to their lives.
The sanctuary opens for three daily ceremonies in the morning, midday, and evening. Visitors should wear modest clothing and prepare for walking on uneven terrain, as the grounds sit in hilly country.
A silver-plated Garuda pillar stands between the inner shrine and the entrance. Worshippers believe this pillar shields them from the presence of Vasuki, the snake deity who guards the grounds.
