Abbey Falls, Waterfall in Kodagu District, Karnataka, India
Abbey Falls is a waterfall in Kodagu District, Karnataka, India, located about 8 kilometers from Madikeri town. The water drops roughly 70 feet (21 meters) over wide rock faces, creating a strong curtain that flows through private coffee plantations.
The waterfall received its name during British colonial times, when it was initially called Jessy Falls after the daughter of the first British chaplain. The current designation eventually replaced the earlier version and has remained in use since then.
A small shrine dedicated to Goddess Kali stands near the observation bridge, reflecting the integration of natural landmarks with Hindu religious practices.
The site opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the monsoon season between July and October bringing the strongest water flow. A hanging bridge allows visitors to view the cascading water, while narrow paths lead through the surrounding plantations.
Multiple mountain springs merge at this location before joining the River Kaveri, creating a wide water curtain across dark mountain rocks. The sound of the cascading water can be heard from the coffee plantations that surround the site.
