Chennakesava Temple, Hindu temple in Belur, India
Chennakesava is a Hoysala-period temple in Belur, southern Karnataka state, known for its elaborately carved exterior walls. The complex stands on a raised platform, the main hall is supported by polished pillars, and every surface displays figures from epic narratives.
Ruler Vishnuvardhana began construction in 1117 following a military victory, and work continued for more than a century. Three generations of stonemasons succeeded one another, with completion reached around 1220.
The temple takes its name from Vishnu worshipped here as "beautiful Kesava," and pilgrims still visit daily to offer prayers at dawn and dusk, continuing centuries of devotion.
The temple sits about 35 kilometers east of Hassan and is reachable from Bengaluru via state highways. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are extensive and exploring thoroughly takes several hours.
Inside hangs a heavy stone chain carved from a single block, suspended freely from the ceiling. The craftsmen left this as a demonstration of their mastery, and it remains movable after centuries.
